In Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day

These are the words from a mother who has experienced the profound impact of pregnancy and infant loss. I will be sharing more stories throughout the month of October, in honour of Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month.

Eugenia’s Story

I got married in 2008, and as a newly married  woman, I was looking forward  to getting  pregnant  and having my babies.
I had had two kids before getting pregnant,  but having  little ones after your wedding  is one we look forward  to,  especially  for us in Africa. It’s as if you are compelled to bear at least one more.
And I was looking forward to it.
I was excited when I eventually  missed my period  few months  after the wedding.
I went to the hospital  and was confirmed  that I was pregnant.
Then I started  having little  spotting. I was booked for ultrasound to  see what was the cause.
After the scan, I was told by my doctor that it’s  a false pregnancy and  that my womb was empty.
I was really shocked, because I had taken the pregnancy  test  twice and it all came back positive. So  my doctor asked that I come back after one month to take  the test all over again. When it was one month, I went back to my doctor who sent me for another ultrasound.
I was booked for the ultrasound, and then I left for work. It was at work that very same day that I felt a very sharp pain In my stomach.  I couldn’t  walk, sit, stand nothing. It was the most excruciating  pain I had ever felt. I was rushed to the hospital where they finally diagnosed  me of having an ectopic  pregnancy.  By then my right tube had ruptured,  and I was bleeding  internally.
I was rushed  to the theatre,
and thus I lost my precious little one
and my right fallopian tube.

Thanks for giving us this opportunity to open up about our loss.
I haven’t been able to all these years.
I cry silently.
